Request for Qualifications
MARCO is seeking applications for a one-year fellowship opportunity focused on ocean conservation and marine debris prevention. This fellowship is designed to support students or early-career professionals interested in gaining hands-on experience in coastal and ocean science, immersive education and exhibit development, community engagement, and science communication. The selected fellow will split their time supporting two of the organization’s key work groups: the Marine Debris Work Group (MDWG) and the Ocean Conservation Work Group (OCWG).
The fellowship will begin in September or October 2025 and conclude in September 2026, with an estimated commitment of 20 hours per week.
Fellowship Scope and Responsibilities
1. Marine Debris (MDWG) (~10 hours/week)
- Assist with the implementation of marine debris prevention and outreach initiatives.
- Contribute to regional marine debris reduction campaigns.
- Develop science communication and outreach materials (e.g., digital content, printed collateral, posters).
- Attend and represent the organization at relevant conferences or meetings (science, policy, or communication-focused).
- Support in the planning and execution of our biennial regional marine debris conference, scheduled for mid-November in Dewey Beach, DE.
- Work under the guidance of MARCO staff and MDWG leadership, and engage with an expansive network of partners and experts.
Expected Outcomes:
- Strengthened regional collaboration on marine debris solutions.
- Support for public outreach and education around marine debris reduction.
- Professional growth in science communication and stakeholder engagement.

2. Ocean Conservation (OCWG) (~10 hours/week)
- Collaborate with OCWG staff and Mid-Atlantic aquarium partners to support coordination of regional conservation initiatives and educational outreach focused on the Mid-Atlantic ocean and coastal ecosystems
- Assist with developing science communication content and public-facing materials that highlight regional conservation priorities
- Help facilitate communication and engagement among work group members, institutional partners, and other ocean conservation stakeholders
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of educational activities, events, or collaborative projects that promote ocean literacy and conservation
- Incorporate data-supported narratives that demonstrate the role of oceans in the state and national economy, while educating on local conservation issues.
- Track progress and gather input from partners through regular meetings and coordinated planning efforts
Expected Outcomes:
- Enhanced visibility of MARCO’s ocean conservation priorities across the Mid-Atlantic
- Increased public awareness of local ocean and coastal conservation issues.
- Broader access to ocean experiences for local communities.

Qualifications
- Demonstrated interest or background in marine science, ocean conservation, science communication, environmental education, or related fields.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate scientific content for public audiences (with guidance).
- Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate complex scientific concepts to non-technical audiences.
- Ability to manage time effectively, work independently, and collaborate with diverse teams.
- Proficiency in computer and web-based tools, including Gmail, Google Drive, Zoom, and basic online research.
- Experience with exhibit design, virtual reality or immersive tech is a plus.
Fellowship Support
- Award Amount: $40,000 (20 hours/wk)
- Term: September 2025 – October 2026
- Commitment: Estimated 20 hours/week (schedule to be finalized with selected candidate)
- Fellows will receive mentorship, access to a professional network, and professional development opportunities including conferences, workshops, and training.
