Call for Poster Abstracts
Deadline: April 16, 2021
The Mid-Atlantic Committee on the Ocean (MACO) is now accepting abstracts from high school, undergraduate and graduate students and early career professionals for a virtual poster session at the Mid-Atlantic Ocean Forum, scheduled May 3-6. The session will take place on Wednesday, May 5, from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.
The Forum gathers hundreds of ocean professionals and interested stakeholders representing federal and state agencies, marine industries, nonprofit research and advocacy organizations, and the public. The Forum is a free public event! Poster authors are welcome to attend any of the sessions throughout the week. A full schedule of speakers and virtual events will be provided and shared online as soon as it is available.
Poster abstracts are welcome on topics relevant to ocean science, policy and socioeconomics in the Mid-Atlantic region. Students and early career professionals within five years of graduation may submit proposals. MACO is looking to feature young and diverse voices working on ocean science and policy. Presentations that share research in these areas from the perspectives of current societal challenges such as post-COVID recovery and impacts on vulnerable and marginalized communities are encouraged.
Sample poster topics include:
- Ocean and/or climate justice, equity and inclusion
- Ocean data, characterization and mapping
- Ocean habitats and special areas
- Marine debris and pollution
- Ocean acidification, or other climate-driven ocean change
- Offshore wind and renewable ocean energy
- Non-consumptive recreational use
- Maritime commerce & navigation, or other sustainable ocean use
- Offshore sand use and management
- Ocean wildlife, fisheries and avian species
Selected authors will be assigned 3-minute segments to present their posters followed by Q&A with the audience. Authors may share their screens to display their posters in the format of their choice during presentations; however, copies in commonly accessible file formats (PDF preferred) must be provided for posting online in advance. Presentations will be recorded and posted following the event. Depending on the number of submissions, we may not be able to accomodate live presentations for all qualified posters; however, authors will be provided an opportunity to share the poster with or without a virtual video presentation for viewing on the Forum website. Video of forum plenary proceedings and poster submissions will be posted on the MACO website and made available to the public.
